Fictional episodic character in the play "The Wood Demon", an eighty-year-old wandering soldier-turned-monastic almsgatherer who served in the Caucasus under Nicholas I and speaks Lezgian; added by Chekhov so that Korovin ("the Wood Demon") is not alone onstage.

FICTIONAL CHARACTER -- the aged soldier-turned-monastic-almsgatherer, introduced by Chekhov at \S18 as an "episodic figure" needed so that Korovin ("the Wood Demon" in his character sense) is not alone onstage. His service "in the Caucasus" under Nicholas I and his fluency in Lezgian (a Northeast Caucasian language of Dagestan) are period-appropriate biographical color for a retired soldier of that generation, not further identified beyond this letter.
