A local knacker (horse-slaughterer) whose hut and yard stand on the common pasture; Zotov, half-drunk and undecided until the last moment, brings the horse and dog to him, and in a dazed half-memory witnesses him kill both animals.

A zhivodernya is a knacker's yard, where old, injured, or unwanted horses (and sometimes other animals) were slaughtered for their hides, hooves, and other by-products -- a recognized, if grim, fixture of rural and small-town economic life, and the fate Mark Ivanych bluntly recommends for Zotov's 'dependents.'
