Seryozha's late uncle, a good violinist who died of consumption; Bykovsky invokes his death as a cautionary example against smoking, while Seryozha remembers him fondly for his violin -- now kept at the Grigoryevs' -- and is quietly troubled by thoughts of where the dead go.
