Mademoiselle Ilovaiskaya
Ilovaiskaya
also: m-elle Иловайская, Иловайская
An eighteen-year-old girl encountered at the Khrenovoye stud farm on 8 February 1892, who charmed Chekhov's famine-relief party with her originality and her performance in the amateur theatricals rehearsing Gogol's "Marriage." Very likely the daughter of the farm's manager, Stepan Pavlovich Ilovaisky, given the shared setting, though the letter does not state the relationship outright. Distinct from the fictional of the story "On the Road" -- a coincidence of surname only.
Reading notes
- To M. P. Chekhova, 9 February 1892. Bobrov. §4 mademoiselle Ilovaiskaya, an eighteen-year-old girl
Almost certainly the manager Ilovaisky's daughter, given the setting (the same Khrenovoye stud farm household) and the immediate narrative proximity, but the letter never states the relationship outright, so it is recorded here as an inference rather than a stated fact. Distinct from the unrelated fictional character in the story "On the Road" -- a coincidence of surname only, not a corpus cross-reference.
