The cowardly, wheedling impresario of the theater company, who hides under an actress's dressing-room sofa believing a creditor and cuckolded husband (Pryndin) is stalking him, bribes her with escalating cash and a half-benefit to keep quiet, then shamelessly reneges once he realizes he mistook a stranger for his pursuer.
