Economist by training (1852-1917), chairman of the Russian Literary Society at the time of this letter; per the source editors' notes, three letters from Chekhov to Isakov and five from Isakov to Chekhov survive (1888-1891 and 1893). This letter of 9 April 1889 is a reply to Isakov's letter of 5 April 1889, declining an invitation to a Petersburg literary evening and promising a piece for the almanac "Severnye Tsvety."
