Volodya's father, a warm, garrulous man first seen greeting his son's arrival in his waistcoat with scissors in hand; he twice mangles Chechevitsyn's surname in his hospitality ("Cherepitsyn," "Chibisov") and, after the boys are found, delivers the story's closing reprimand in his study.
