A drunken musician ("the first violin") who rents room 31 in the "Tunis" furnished rooms, two weeks behind on rent; his tipsy, disarming logic -- that Brykovich is himself just another lodger with no more claim on the rooms than anyone else -- turns a landlord's tirade into a night of maudlin drinking together.
