Kiryakov's unnamed wife, who gives birth over the course of the story's long night; she confides to the midwife that her husband's honesty and thrift, carried past all ordinary measure, leave her and their children forever tense with fear, and her face shows a guilty expression at Kiryakov's remark that a child not born fed and clothed is an extravagance.
