A colleague of Modest Alexeich mentioned only in his opening anecdote (Section 10): on receiving the Order of St. Anna, second class, just as his quarrelsome wife Anna returned to him, his superior joked that he now had 'three Annas: one in the buttonhole, two on the neck' -- the pun the whole story goes on to enact literally through Modest Alexeich's own marriage and decoration.
