Kuze-San

The Japanese consul stationed at Korsakovsky Post on southern Sakhalin during Chekhov's 1890 stay, living there with two secretaries in what Chekhov calls "the European manner"; Chekhov describes him as a good acquaintance and reports an obligatory formal call to present decorations conferred on the consul and his staff, at which Chekhov had to drink champagne despite a headache. The romanization "Kuze-San" is Chekhov's own (Кузе-Сан in the source) and is retained as given rather than resolved to a standard modern transliteration of a Japanese name, since the underlying identity is not independently confirmed from the source alone.
