Kuzma

also: Кузьма Шкворень, Кузьма, the gallows-bird, вешаный

A restless, chattering vagrant of about thirty, freshly released after a month in the local lock-up and known to his own village as "gallows-bird" for having narrowly escaped a lynching as a boy; he steals the alms-collector Yefrem's money in the night, denies and then violently deflects the accusation, and finally breaks down in terrified, weeping repentance when Yefrem's indifference convinces him he has wronged God rather than a man.
