Lev Savvich Turmanov

The vain, complacent minor official at the center of "Revenge" (1886); on overhearing his wife arranging a rendezvous with Degtyarev, he nurses his wounded self-esteem in silence and hatches an anonymous extortion letter against a shopkeeper as an oblique, displaced act of revenge -- a scheme that misfires completely when Degtyarev, not the police, intercepts the payoff.
