A sturdy, dark-haired old deacon, colleague to the archpriest, whose bald crown and thick black eyebrows are noted on his entrance; distressed by news of his son Pyotr's unbelief and unsanctioned cohabitation, he begs the archpriest to dictate a stern letter of rebuke, then has second thoughts about sending it.
