Lyubov Ivanovna

Belokurov's mistress, some ten years his elder, stout and self-important, who rented a wing of his estate as a summer place three years before the story's action and simply stayed on for good; she manages Belokurov strictly, requiring his permission before he leaves the house, and by the story's end he has bought a smaller estate in her name.
