Makar Denisych

also: Макар Денисыч, Макар, Макарка, little Makarka

A young clerk-cum-junior-steward in General Stremoukhov's household who secretly writes stories and verses every evening, hiding the manuscripts at the bottom of his trunk; the whole district knows him as an unrecognized amateur "writer" and mocks him for it, and spring only sharpens his sense of isolation and wounded literary vanity.
