Volodya's mother

Volodya's frivolous, spoiled mother, who has run through two fortunes -- her own and her late husband's -- and remains drawn to high society despite the Shumikhins' condescension toward her; she is oblivious to her son's shame and, the night of his death, is in the next room being consoled after his final outburst against her.
