Old Maxim

The old miller at whose mill Nilov and Kupriyanov take shelter; he first reports the rabid wolf prowling near the village, later helps free the wolf from Nilov's grip and tends the wound, and the next morning offers his own folk cure -- a whispered charm and a bitter wormwood draught -- before Nilov insists on doctors instead.
