A tinsmith who leads the local Jewish wedding band in which Yakov Ivanov occasionally plays fiddle for extra income; Shakhkes takes more than half of the band's earnings for himself and sends Rothschild to fetch Yakov when the band needs him, including in the story's climactic scene, when Rothschild comes to summon the dying Yakov to a wedding.
