Kvashin's wife, a plump, mild-faced young woman of about twenty who waits out five days of rain at the dacha with her mother; convinced her husband is deceiving her after finding his town flat locked, she is instantly won over again by his glib excuse when he returns.

- Bad Weather §36 You're no dowerless bride
A "бесприданница" (dowerless bride) was a woman married without a dowry, and so without independent leverage or security within her marriage; the mother-in-law's insistence that she gave "twenty thousand" and that her daughter is no бесприданница is an assertion of the family's financial standing as grounds for demanding fidelity and respect from Kvashin.
