Nadezhda Lvovna Kandurina

The plain, fabulously wealthy, reclusive owner of the Shabelsky wood and estate, who years before loved Prince Sergei Ivanovich (or he her) in a romance that ended unexplained; she refuses the narrator's request to hunt, but is later glimpsed at the window watching the prince outside with a mixture of rapture and grief, and sends a permit after he leaves.
