Nikandr
also: Никандр, селедочник
A seventy-year-old herring-seller who comes to the yard each evening; he insists suicides are unforgivable sinners who cannot be prayed for, and tells the story of a general's widow who bribed officials to give her son a secret Christian burial, only for the dead man to howl under the church until watchmen were paid to dig him up and rebury him outside the graveyard.
