The orderly of Ward No. 6 in "Ward No. 6": an old retired soldier who beats the ward's patients routinely and without malice, believing violence to be simply how order is kept. He beats Dr. Andrei Yefimych himself once the doctor is committed to the ward as a patient, precipitating the fatal stroke that ends the story.
