Nikolai's wife and Sasha's mother, one of the central figures of Chekhov's novella "Peasants" (Мужики, 1897): a former Moscow servant who comes with her family to the impoverished village of Zhukovo when Nikolai falls ill, is struck by the family's poverty, and comforts her sisters-in-law Marya and Fyokla by chanting half-understood Scripture at them. Pious, absent-minded, and given to pilgrimages, she is respected in the village for reading the Gospel aloud with Sasha. After Nikolai's death she and Sasha walk back to Moscow, ending the novella begging alms door to door. She also appears, established at the "Lisbon" furnished rooms in Moscow, in the discarded draft continuation chapters given in this corpus under "Unfinished [Schulz]" (work id neokonchennoe-shulc); see that work's crossref to this one.
