Olya

A former ward of Sofya Lvovna's family and once a lively, plump, laughing girl, now a pale, transparent novice in a women's convent, having taken the veil after her brother Dmitri was sent to penal servitude and her mother died of grief; her serene, bloodless calm both fascinates and unsettles Sofya Lvovna, who visits her obsessively after her own affair collapses, though Olya can only answer with rote consolation.
