A mounted estate overseer from the Makarovsky estate who stops to share a pipe-light and the night with two shepherds on the steppe; a serious, deliberate man of quiet military bearing who listens to the old shepherd's tales of Zhmenya and buried treasure, and confirms in his own turn that two real treasures -- a robbers' gold shipment meant for Peter the Great's fleet, and Don Cossack plunder from 1812 -- lie buried nearby.
