Pavel Ivanych

also: Павел Иваныч

A gaunt, dying man of unclear social rank sharing the sick bay with Gusev, self-styled as "protest incarnate" against the injustices of the world, the ship's class system, and the doctors who he believes shipped out the terminally ill to be rid of them. Son of a priest, embittered and grandiloquent even as his own body fails, he delivers long tirades against tyranny and hypocrisy that Gusev only half-follows; he dies partway through the story and is buried at sea.
