Here Aleksei Alekseyevich Suvorin had signed his own letter to Chekhov with Pobedonostsev's name and initial as a household joke; the elder Suvorin's interception of Chekhov's reply (\S3-4) is what lets Chekhov relay the joke back rather than let it land privately.
