A provincial theater impresario, given to melodramatic self-pity, whose star touring comic actor Dikobrazov II goes on a drinking bout on the eve of a performance; he reluctantly enlists the theater barber Grebeshkov to "cure" him and is horrified, then astonished, by the brutal remedy.
