Mme Pravdina
also: m-me Правдина
Presumably the wife of the actor Osip Pravdin; described by Chekhov, with wry irony, as "also virtuous, but a very nasty piece of work," for gossiping that Lika was abetting sin. First name unresolved.
Reading notes
- To I. P. Chekhov, 16 July 1889. Parokhod "Olga". §5 virtuous Lika ... how Mme Pravdina (also virtuous, but a very nasty piece of work) gossips
Chekhov's irony turns on both women being called "virtuous" (добродетельная) while Mme Pravdina spreads gossip that Lika is abetting sin -- a comic dig at moralizing hypocrisy within the troupe.
