Pyotr Leontyich

Anya's father, a drawing and penmanship master at the local grammar school who took to drink after his wife's death and whose consequent poverty and disgrace are the direct cause of Anya's arranged marriage. Kind, weak, and increasingly destitute across the story, he is reduced by its end to watching his transformed daughter ride past him in a carriage he can no longer even approach.
