The narrator frames his seduction as a deliberate psychological technique rather than a spontaneous attraction: he describes, step by step, engineering the husband into unknowingly relaying manufactured flattery and later a staged account of his own melancholy, so that the wife falls for a persona built entirely out of secondhand hearsay. The story is told in the first person by the manipulator himself, without narratorial comment or moral framing; nothing in the text condemns or excuses him. The translation preserves this unmoralized, self-satisfied account as written, consistent with Chekhov's practice elsewhere of presenting a character's own voice without editorial intrusion.
