The semi-legendary ninth-century Varangian founder of the Rurikid dynasty and, by tradition, of the Russian state; invoked by the student, alongside Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great, as a marker of how far back in Russian history the same cold wind, poverty, and misery already existed.
