A provincial painter who brought his picture "The Train Wreck" ("Крушение поезда") to Moscow seeking a venue to exhibit it; Chekhov sends him to the actor A. P. Lensky with a letter of introduction, having already recommended one of the Society of Art and Literature's halls. Very plausibly the same unnamed painter -- husband of Elizaveta Konstantinovna Sakharova of Kharkov -- whose wish to exhibit in Moscow Chekhov was already brokering with Lensky in the letter to Sakharova of 13 January 1889; later correspondence (1890) also references "the painter Sakharov," consistent with this identification. The painter Sakharov, named directly here for the first time; very plausibly the same unnamed provincial painter -- husband of Elizaveta Konstantinovna Sakharova of Kharkov -- whose wish to exhibit a picture in Moscow Chekhov was already brokering with Lensky in the letter to Sakharova of 13 January 1889, which flags Lensky as the Society of Art and Literature contact for that purpose. This letter reads as the follow-through: Sakharov now named directly and sent to Lensky in person with his picture "The Train Wreck." A later 1890 letter also references "the painter Sakharov," consistent with this identification though not conclusive; flagged as a strong but not certified cross-reference pending further research.
