Sasha Smirnov

A grateful young patient, repeatedly identified as "his mother's only son," who presents his doctor, Koshelkov, with an indecent antique bronze candelabrum as thanks for saving his life; at the story's close he unwittingly completes the joke's circuit by delivering the doctor a matching second candelabrum, purchased from the secondhand dealer who turns out to be his own mother.
