A Taganrog acquaintance Chekhov spots on a train on his way back from the Holy Mountains, heavily made up and looking haggard; possibly a relative of the Khodakovsky family of Taganrog (compare Khodakovsky and his daughter Manya), though the exact relationship is not established in the corpus.

Chekhov's description -- that she paints and rouges herself garishly and has grown 'thoroughly haggard' ('окошкодохлилась,' a nonce coinage of his own, roughly 'window-shopped/withered-looking') -- is typical of the letter's blunt, often unflattering physical commentary on women he observes in passing.
