A stout, aging comic actor of fifty-eight who, after thirty-five years on the stage and a triumphant benefit performance, wakes alone and drunk in his dressing room still in the costume of Kalkhas, wanders the dark, empty theater in terror, and confesses to the prompter his dread of dying alone, unloved, and forgotten.
