1 The comic actor
Vasily Vasilyich Svetlovidov, a stout, sturdy old man of fifty-eight, woke up and looked about him in surprise. Before him, on either side of a small mirror, two tallow candles were guttering out. Their motionless, sluggish flames dimly lit a small room with painted wooden walls, thick with tobacco smoke and dusk. All around were the traces of a recent meeting of
Bacchus and Melpomene – a meeting secret, but riotous and unseemly as vice itself. On the chairs and on the floor lay frock coats, trousers, sheets of newspaper, an overcoat with a gaudy lining, a top hat. On the table reigned a strange, chaotic disorder: empty bottles jostled and mingled with glasses, three wreaths, a gilded cigarette case, a glass-holder, a winning ticket in the second lottery loan with a damp corner, a case with a gold pin. All this rabble was liberally strewn with cigarette butts, ash, small scraps of a torn letter. Svetlovidov himself sat in an armchair, still in
the costume of Kalkhas.
2 "Saints alive, I’m in the dressing room!"
the comic actor said, looking around. "Well, I never! When on earth did I manage to fall asleep?"
3 He listened. The silence was like the grave. The cigarette case and the lottery ticket quickly reminded him that tonight was his
benefit performance, that he had had a success, that in every interval he had drunk a great deal of brandy and red wine with his admirers, who had stormed the dressing room.
4 "When on earth did I fall asleep?" he repeated. "Ah, you old fossil, you old fossil! You old dog, you! So then, you got so pickled you fell asleep sitting up! Bravo!"
5 And the comic actor grew merry. He burst into a drunken, coughing laugh, took up one of the candles, and went out of the dressing room. The stage was dark and empty. From its depths, from the wings, and from the auditorium blew a light but perceptible draft. Little breezes, like spirits, wandered freely about the stage, jostling one another, whirling and playing with the candle flame. The fire trembled, bent this way and that, and threw a feeble light now on the row of doors leading to the dressing rooms, now on the red wing-curtain by which stood a bucket, now on a large frame lying in the middle of the stage.
6 "
Yegorka!" the comic actor shouted. "Yegorka, devil take you!
Petrushka! Fallen asleep, have you, devils, damn your hides! Yegorka!"
–
7 "A... a... a!" answered the echo.
– А... а... а!
8 The comic actor remembered that
Yegorka and Petrushka, on account of the benefit, had each been given three roubles for drink. After such a tip it was hardly likely they had stayed the night in the theater.
9 The comic actor grunted, sat down on a stool, and set the candle on the floor. His head was heavy and drunken; throughout his whole body the mass of beer, wine, and brandy he had drunk had only just begun to "burn off," and from sleeping in a sitting position he felt weak and limp.
10 "There’s a squadron bivouacked in my mouth..." he muttered, spitting. "Ah, you shouldn’t drink, you old fool, you shouldn’t! And my back aches, and my head’s splitting, and I’m chilled through... Old age."
11 He looked out in front of him. Barely, just barely, could he make out the
prompter’s box, the boxes with their brass letters, and the music stands of the orchestra; the whole auditorium seemed a black, bottomless pit, a gaping maw out of which stared a cold, forbidding darkness... Ordinarily modest and cozy, now, at night, it seemed boundlessly deep, desolate as the grave, and soulless... The comic actor looked at the darkness, then at the candle, and went on grumbling:
12 "Yes, old age... However you dodge it, however bold a face you put on and play the fool, at fifty-eight – it’s all up! Life, my respects to you! Well now,
Vasinka... And yet I’ve served on the stage for thirty-five years, and it seems I’m seeing the theater at night for the first time in my life... A curious thing, by God... Yes, the first time! It’s eerie, devil take it... Yegorka!" he shouted, getting up. "Yegorka!"
13 "A... a... a?" answered the echo.
– А... а... а?
14 And at the same moment as the echo, somewhere far off, as though from the very depths of the gaping maw, the bells struck for early
matins. Kalkhas crossed himself.
15 "Petrushka!" he shouted. "Where are you, devils? Lord, why am I calling on the unclean one? Drop those words, drop the drink – you’re an old man now, it’s time to think of dying! At fifty-eight people go to matins, they prepare for death, and you... oh Lord!"
16 "Lord have mercy, how eerie it is!" he muttered. "Why, if a man sat here all night like this, he could die of fright. This is just the place to summon spirits!"
17 At the word "spirits" he grew still more frightened... The wandering breezes and the flickering of patches of light stirred and goaded his imagination to the utmost degree... The comic actor seemed to shrink into himself, grew haggard, and, bending down for the candle, cast one last, childishly frightened glance at the dark pit. His face, disfigured by the greasepaint, was blank and almost witless. Without reaching the candle, he suddenly sprang up and fixed a motionless stare on the darkness. He stood thus in silence for half a minute, then, seized by an extraordinary terror, clutched his head and stamped his feet...
18 "Who’s there?" he cried in a sharp voice, not his own. "Who’s there?"
19 In one of the boxes stood a white human figure. When the light fell upon it, one could make out arms, a head, and even a white beard.
20 "Who’s there?" the comic actor repeated in a desperate voice. The white figure swung one leg over the box rail and jumped down into the orchestra, then noiselessly, like a shadow, made its way toward the footlights.
21 "It’s me, sir!" it said, climbing up onto the stage.
22 "Who?" cried Kalkhas, backing away.
23 "It’s me... me, sir,
Nikita Ivanych... the prompter, sir. Don’t trouble yourself."
24 The comic actor, trembling and half out of his mind with fright, sank exhausted onto the stool and hung his head.
25 "It’s me, sir!" said a tall, sinewy man, bald, with a gray beard, in nothing but his underclothes and barefoot, coming toward him. "It’s me, sir! The prompter, sir."
26 "My God..." the comic actor got out, passing a hand over his brow and breathing heavily. "Is it you, Nikitushka? Wh-why are you here?"
27 "I sleep here, sir, in the box. There’s nowhere else to sleep... Only don’t you tell
Alexey Fomich, sir."
28 "You, Nikitushka..." muttered the exhausted Kalkhas, stretching out a trembling hand to him. "My God, my God!... Called out sixteen times, given three wreaths and any number of things... everyone was in raptures, but not one of them woke the drunken old man or drove him home. I’m an old man, Nikitushka. I’m fifty-eight. I’m sick! My feeble spirit languishes."
29 Kalkhas reached toward the prompter and, trembling all over, clung to his hand.
30 "Don’t go, Nikitushka..." he muttered, as if in delirium. "Old, feeble, it’s time to die... I’m frightened!"
31 "It’s time you were home, Vasily Vasilyich, sir!" Nikitushka said tenderly.
32 "I won’t go. I have no home! No, no!"
33 "Lord Jesus! Have you forgotten where you live?"
34 "I don’t want to go there, I don’t want to..." muttered the comic actor in a kind of frenzy. "There I’m alone... I have no one, Nikitushka, no kin, no old wife, no children... Alone, like the wind in the field... I’ll die, and there’ll be no one to remember me."
35 The trembling passed from the comic actor to Nikitushka as well... The drunken, agitated old man clutched at his hand, convulsively squeezed it, and smeared it with a mixture of greasepaint and tears. Nikitushka shivered with cold and hunched his shoulders.
36 "I’m frightened, alone..." muttered Kalkhas. "No one to caress me, comfort me, put me drunk to bed. Whose am I? Who needs me? Who loves me? No one loves me, Nikitushka!"
37 "The public loves you, Vasily Vasilyich!"
38 "The public has gone home and is asleep... No, no one needs me, no one loves me... No wife, no children."
39 "Well now, what’s there to grieve over!"
40 "But I’m a man, a living man... I’m a
nobleman, Nikitushka, of good family... Before I fell into this pit, I served in the army, in the artillery. What a fine fellow I was, handsome, hot-blooded, bold... And then what an actor I was, my God, my God! And where has it all gone, where is that time now?"
41 Holding the prompter’s hand, the comic actor raised himself up and blinked his eyes as though he had come out of the darkness into a brightly lit room. Down his cheeks, leaving streaked trails in the greasepaint, rolled great tears...
42 "What a time it was!" he went on raving. "I looked at this pit tonight and remembered everything... everything! This pit has devoured thirty-five years of my life, and what a life, Nikitushka! I look at it now and see it all down to the last little detail, as clearly as I see your face!... I remember, when I was a young actor, when I was just coming into my full ardor,
a certain woman fell in love with me for my acting... Graceful, slender as a poplar, young, innocent, clever, ardent as a summer dawn! I believed that even if there were no sun in the sky, the earth would still be bright, for no night could withstand her beauty!"
43 Kalkhas spoke with fervor, shaking his head and his hand... Before him, in nothing but his underclothes, stood barefoot Nikitushka, listening. Darkness enveloped them both, feebly dispelled by the guttering candle. It was a strange, extraordinary scene, the like of which no theater in the world had ever known, and the only spectator was the soulless, black pit...
44 "She loved me," Kalkhas went on, gasping for breath. "And then what? I remember, I stand before her, just as I’m standing before you now... She was more beautiful that time than ever, and looked at me in such a way that I shall not forget those eyes even in the grave! Tenderness, velvet, the glow of youth, depth! Rapturous, happy, I fall before her on my knees, I beg for happiness..."
45 The comic actor caught his breath and went on in a sinking voice:
46 "And she says: give up the stage! Do you understand? She could love an actor, but be
his wife – never! I remember, that very day I was performing... The role was a vile, buffoonish one... I acted, while inside myself there were cats and snakes... I didn’t give up the stage, no, but from that day my eyes were opened!... I understood that I was a slave, a plaything of other people’s idleness, that there was no such thing as sacred art, that it was all delusion and deceit. I understood the public! From that day I no longer believed in applause, or wreaths, or raptures! Yes, brother! He applauds me, he buys my photograph for a rouble, but all the same I am alien to him, I am dirt to him, almost a kept woman! Out of vanity he seeks my acquaintance, but he would never demean himself so far as to give me his sister,
his daughter, in marriage! I don’t believe in him, I hate him, and he is a stranger to me!"
47 "It’s time you were home, sir," the prompter said timidly.
48 "I understand them perfectly!" cried Kalkhas, shaking his fists at the black pit. "I understood it even then!... While still young I saw the light and beheld the truth... And that enlightenment cost me dear, Nikitushka. After that affair, after that girl, I began to drift aimlessly, to live carelessly, without looking ahead... I played the fool, I jeered, I corrupted minds... I debased and broke my own tongue, I lost the image and likeness of a man... Akh! This pit has devoured me! I never felt it before, but today... when I woke and looked back, there behind me were fifty-eight years! Only now have I seen old age! The song is sung!"
49 Kalkhas still trembled and gasped for breath... When, a little later, Nikitushka led him off to the dressing room and began to undress him, he collapsed entirely and went limp, but did not stop muttering and weeping.
