Tanya Pesotskaya

Yegor Semyonych Pesotsky's daughter, who as a child was nicknamed "Heron" by Kovrin and who, since the age of fourteen, has been certain she would marry him. She invites Kovrin to Borisovka at the story's opening, becomes his wife by the end of Chapter V, and is the first to discover him talking to his hallucination and to insist he be treated as mentally ill. The marriage curdles under the strain of his "cure": he grows cold and cruel to her and to her father, and the couple eventually separates. She writes Kovrin a final, anguished letter -- delivered to him in Sevastopol just before his death -- blaming him for her father's death and the ruin of the garden and cursing him for having turned out "mad" rather than the extraordinary man she had fallen in love with.
