The tall, fat-jowled, sleepy-eyed keeper of the tavern where the story takes place, a shrewd and unsentimental man who accepts a ruined gentleman's pawned medallion, checks its hallmark, and then quietly scratches the portrait out of it -- the story's final, understated act of cruelty attributed to him with bitter irony as 'virtuous.'
