Vera Semyonovna

A physician who abandoned medicine after surviving her young husband's death from typhus and her own subsequent suicide attempt; living with her brother Vladimir, she drifts into a private Tolstoyan conviction that resistance to evil -- even evil done to oneself -- has no moral justification, a turn that dismantles their old intimacy before she leaves abruptly to vaccinate peasants in the provinces.
