Vladimir Fyodorovich Snegiryov (1847-1916), a real Moscow University professor of gynecology and a founding figure of Russian operative gynecology, cited by Chekhov as the famous authority who speaks of "the Russian woman" with a tremor in his voice -- Chekhov's factual anchor in his rebuttal to Shavrova's claim that gynecologists are cynics.
