Headnote

Written from Moscow two weeks after his last letter to her, this is Chekhov in full mentor-critic mode, answering a manuscript Shavrova had sent him along with – evidently – some pointed remarks of her own about doctors, since the letter opens mid-argument, rebutting her charge that gynecologists are secret cynics and libertines. He turns the accusation into a small essay on the idealism bred by constant exposure to "raw prose," folding in a reference to Nikolai Nekrasov’s idealized Russian woman and to the real-life obstetrician Vladimir Snegiryov, before landing on the letter’s best-known passage: the story of Noah’s three sons, in which Ham is condemned not for noticing his father’s drunkenness but for losing sight of the ark and the saved world beside it – Chekhov’s argument, stated as a parable, that a writer’s fairness to a subject’s flaws must not blind her to the subject’s real stature.

The manuscript under discussion is a story about a merchant’s daughter, its supporting cast of a "Vera" and a Greek girl from Taganrog (Chekhov’s own hometown, which he invokes as if it were a real acquaintance of hers), and a doctor’s monologue on his disbelief in medicine. Chekhov praises the central figure but faults the story for description crowding out action – "heavy, gloomy barracks" in place of a story’s architecture – and tells her plainly to cut everyone but the daughter and the doctor.

The letter closes on the same throughline as his 2 September letter: an open question about whether she is relocating to Petersburg, again relayed as Mikhail Chekhov’s inference rather than her own confirmed plan. The envelope address given at the end – Kislovka, the Bazilevsky house – is her Moscow address at the time.

We old bachelors smell like dogs? So be it. But as for women’s doctors being secret Lotharios and cynics at heart, allow me to argue. Gynecologists deal with a raw prose you have never dreamed of, and which you, perhaps, if you knew it, with the ferocity native to your imagination, would endow with a smell worse than a dog’s. Whoever is forever at sea loves the land; whoever is forever sunk in prose longs passionately for poetry. All gynecologists are idealists. Your doctor reads poetry – instinct told you the truth; I would add that he is a great liberal, something of a mystic, and dreams of a wife in the mold of Nekrasov’s Russian woman. The famous Snegiryov speaks of "the Russian woman" with nothing less than a tremor in his voice. Another gynecologist I know is in love with some mysterious veiled stranger he once glimpsed from a distance. A third goes to the theater for every opening night and afterward stands cursing loudly by the coat racks, insisting that authors are obliged to portray nothing but ideal women, and so on. You have also lost sight of the fact that a stupid man, or a mediocrity, cannot make a good gynecologist. Intelligence, even seminary-bred intelligence, shines brighter than a bald spot, yet you noticed and underlined the bald spot while tossing the intelligence overboard. You also noticed and underlined that a fat man – brrr! – gives off some sort of grease, but entirely lost sight of the fact that he is a professor, that is, that he spent several years thinking and doing something that set him above millions of people, above every little Vera and every Taganrog Greek girl, above all dinners and wines. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and, I believe, Japheth. Ham noticed only that his father was a drunk, and entirely lost sight of the fact that Noah was a genius, that he built the ark and saved the world. Writers ought not to imitate Ham. Mark that well. I do not presume to ask that you love the gynecologist and the professor, but I do presume to remind you of fairness, which an objective writer needs more than air.
The girl of merchant stock is done superbly. Good, too, is the place in the doctor’s speech where he speaks of his disbelief in medicine, but he should not be made to drink after every sentence. The love of the corpse is the irritation of your captive thought. You have never seen corpses.
Now, from particulars to the whole. Here allow me to cry for help. This is not a story and not a novella, not a work of art, but a long row of heavy, gloomy barracks. Where is your architecture, with which you so enchanted your humble servant at the start? Where is the lightness, the freshness, the grace? Read through your story: a description of a dinner, then a description of young ladies and matrons passing by, then a description of a party, then a description of a dinner again... and so on without end. Descriptions, descriptions, and no action whatsoever. You must begin straight with the merchant’s daughter, stop there, and out with Vera, out with the Greek girls, out with all of them, save the doctor and the merchant’s brood.
We need to talk. So you are not moving to Petersburg after all? I had counted on seeing you in Petersburg, where, by Misha’s assurance, you supposedly wished to move. Well, keep well. May the angels of heaven keep you. Your imagination is becoming interesting. Forgive the long letter.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
