Russian electrical engineer (1847-1894), inventor of the "Yablochkov candle," an early practical arc lamp that brought electric street lighting to Paris, London, and other cities in the late 1870s -- cited by the orator alongside Struve as a man of merely useful, unglamorous achievement next to the actor's art.
