An elderly peasant of the village of Malinovtsy in Kursk province, sent out by his commune with an icon of the Kazan Mother of God and a collection box to raise alms for rebuilding their church after it burned down; his flat, fatalistic piety -- the money is God's, not his -- both baffles and eventually unnerves the thief who robs him.
