Yegor Savvich

A shaggy, self-important young genre painter lodging for the summer at a widow's dacha; he refuses to marry Katya on the grounds that a true artist must stay free, consoles himself with vodka and grandiose daydreams of a fame and a body of work he does not actually possess, and receives his fellow painters' visit that evening as an equal exchange of unrealized ambitions.
