A contemporary writer of stories, invoked here only by name as the established author whose byline risks being confused with the pseudonym "Yevg." used by the unnamed authoress of "The Violin" (Скрипка) -- Chekhov's practical concern is that readers will misattribute her stories to him. Distinct from the unrelated invented character (alias "Евгений Львов" in a different, parodic story) and from the unidentified, neither of whom share this surname.

Chekhov's objection is purely practical: the abbreviated pseudonym "Yevg." (Евг.), used by the unnamed authoress of the story "The Violin" (Скрипка), reads as short for "Yevgeny" -- and there was already an established writer of stories publishing under the name Yevgeny Lvov. A reader encountering "Yevg." on a byline would reasonably take the story for his, not hers; Chekhov is warning that the pseudonym will misdirect credit rather than protect her anonymity. (Romanized "Yevgeny" per this corpus's word-initial Е → "Ye" rule.)
