A recently-dead old peasant of Kovyli, remembered by the old shepherd as a lifelong sorcerer possessed by an "unclean power": melons that whistled, a pike that laughed, a white ox that was really him, a talking hare, and a throat sickness he was said to have loosed on the whole village in revenge for being flogged. Reputed to be the only person who could see the district's spellbound buried treasures -- and to have died without ever revealing or digging up a single one.
