A village 15 versts along the road where Chekhov, the police assessor, and the assessor's clerk stop to "rest" at a Jewish-run shop; the shopkeeper ("the zhid") runs for liqueur while his wife ("the zhidovka") cooks the fish soup Chekhov mentions earlier in the letter, and the drunken assessor dresses down the local village constable, tithingman, and road contractor in front of Chekhov.
