A narrow gorge of the Terek river on the Georgian Military Road, cut between high walls of rock; the setting of the letter's comic-heroic sketch of Chekhov's carriage racing along a ledge above the river, and named by Chekhov via Lermontov's phrase "the defiles of Daryal."
